CAT DIESEL POWER

BARLOWORLD POWER SYSTEMS, sole supplier of Caterpillar engines in southern Africa, is proud to report on the two additions to the CAT engine family.

"The C15 and C16 are proving to be very successful in local conditions and in trucking applications" says OEM/Truck Engines manager Dave Vice. "Considered internationally to be the best overall value in the industry, they are now the standard models for all new CAT powered trucks entering South Africa from the USA."

EVOLUTIONARY ENHANCEMENTS

The C15 and C16, built on the proven platform of the 300-billion-kilometre CAT 3406 engine, feature more power, reduced engine weight, superior fuel economy, greater reliability, leading-edge electronics, long-life- to-overhaul and the lowest operating costs in the industry.

Their fuel efficiency derives partly from Advanced Diesel Engine Management (ADEM) 2000, one of the industry's most advanced Year 2000 compliant systems for monitoring and improving truck engine performance. ADEM 2000 provides an advanced 32-bit, 24MHz processor, additional memory, and enhanced compatibility with new vehicle technology to track the engine's most crucial information.

The leak-free seal design, made possible through enhanced seals incorporated into the cam access  cover, the flywheel housing, the oil pan, the water lines and the front plate to block joint, makes for improved engine reliability.

The C15 and C16's drive-by noise is reduced by .5 decibels through the high-contact ratio spur gear trains, thicker gaskets on the isolated oil pans and stronger seals on the sound-attenuating front camshaft access covers.

Other enhancements include improved routing of the wiring harness and a Caterpillar designed and manufactured fuel injector.

C15 AND C16 COMPONENTRY

Of note are the following C15 and C16 engine components: a serpentine cylinder block which provides improved strength by sculpturing the sides and increasing nominal tensile strength; an overhead camshaft, located in the cylinder head, which allows the use of higher fuel injection pressures critical to high performance, fuel efficiency and lower emissions; a front camshaft access cover to provide leak free sealing; and Electronic Unit Injectors (EUI), designed and built by Caterpillar, for unmatched reliability, durability and fuel economy.

CAT C-15 TRUCK ENGINE

At 14,6-litres, the C-15 offers horsepower ratings from 355 to 550 hp and a life-to-overhaul of 1.6 million kilometres. "The peak torque provides excellent start  ability on steep grades with heavy loads and the engine's exceptional hill-climbing capability enables faster turnaround times, resulting in better productivity on the job," says Vice, "These ratings help reduce driveline wear and operator fatigue because operators can keep trucks in top gears for longer."

CAT C-16 TRUCK ENGINE

The 15,8 litre C-16, with 575 and 600 hp ratings, is top- of-the-line in high-horsepower engines. Says Vice, "The C16 gives drivers more than 720 hp braking capability at 2,100 rpm through a combination of the Jacobs compression release brake and Caterpillar's BrakeSaver hydraulic retarder.

"All in all the C-15 and C-16 engines are expected to carry on the fine tradition of the 300-billion-kilometre CAT 3406 engine."
