Serious Trucks

Despite difficult economic conditions in 2009 Western Star trucks have managed to hold their ground in terms of numbers of units sold.

This according to Ian Riley divisional manager for the Freightliner/Fuso Division at Mercedes Benz South Africa that Western Star trucks is part of, is testament to the fact that well built “Serious Trucks” really come into their own in tough conditions, be this operating conditions or tough economic times.

Looking forward Western Star will continue to be marketed under the “Serious Trucks” logo as a vehicle built for extreme duty operations in South Africa. This primarily encompasses applications such Abnormal loads, Mining and Wrecker/Recovery type trucks. The reason that Western Star has never entered the main stream business of on-highway Interlink type haulers is that South Africa’s restrictive overall length laws do not allow for the operation of conventional or bonneted type trucks with more than one trailer on public roads.

A recent highlight of the year was the handover of six trucks to Rotran where they will be used as tandem pairs for hauling transformers round South Africa, as part of Eskom’s power station expansion programme. Duncan Prince, product manager for Western Star Trucks says “We are proud that we could play a small part in assisting with the developing of South Africa’s infrastructure and that we are contributing to keeping South Africa’s lights burning in the future.”

As has been the situation for the last eight years Western Star off-highway dumpers and mining product will continue to be marketed and supported by Liebherr Africa, whereas on-highway (number-plateable) product will be sold both via Liebherr Africa and the Freightliner on-highway dealer network.
