Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles. Committed To Your Success
Intro Operators that are gearing towards greater diversity in their fleets and are looking at the opportunities presented by the 2010 World Cup event, and other major construction projects, ie Gautrain, airports and sports stadiums, should take a closer look at niche vehicles currently in the pipeline at Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles. Practical new additions to some of the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle ranges have widened the choices for operators looking for specific vehicles to complete specific tasks. Amongst others, the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer is launching the all new Sprinter due for local release in March 2007 with a number of vehicle variants that are bound to extend the vans’ appeal to a wider market. Extensive standard specifications are provided; while some individualised options fulfil operator needs. Safety features strongly in the area of technology on all Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle products. The Actros 2644 demonstrated the superior Telligent driver assistance systems offered for Mercedes-Benz trucks, especially longdistance units. While a number of these systems are offered as options in some heavy truck model ranges, Lane Assist is now a standard safety feature on all truck tractors. Customers that have long-distance fleets, fit the Lane Assistant for higher level of safety for their drivers and vehicle as the warnings from the system helps prevent trucks leaving the road. Telligent proximity control is another passenger car safety feature that can now be fitted to trucks, buses and especially coaches to decrease accident rates. With the current growth in the construction industry, a number of vehicles are targeted at supplying the vehicles needed for the construction tasks building towards 2010. There is the extra-heavy Axor 3335 6x4 heavy duty tipper with optimised payload capabilities going on sale soon with the wellproven 6-cylinder in-line engine that develops 354 hp or 260 kW. This vehicle will be launched in the first quarter of 2007. In addition there is an Actros 4140 (8x6) heavy duty tipper that will also be ideal for on- and off-road conditions. Operators looking for maximum legal capabilities of a solo vehicle will be pleased with the Mercedes-Benz Axor 3535 8x4, a light weight vehicle that optimises payload. It has a 8x4 twin-steer axle configuration ideal for construction work. It is a simple, robust, typical construction site vehicle, offering maximum legal payload as a concrete mixer or tipper. The robust, reliable Atego will have two new product configurations. The Mercedes-Benz Atego 817 and the Atego 1323. These vehicles are new additions to the range in the first quarter of 2007. The Mercedes-Benz Atego 817 with a 4-ton payload is smaller than the popular Atego 1017 and is targeted at the light-weight distribution market. It is offered with optional air-suspension made to order from Germany. Ideal for the movement of fragile goods and office equipment, due to its superior suspension. Other uses are in postal delivery, courier and emergency supply deliveries, where speed is an essential pre-requisite. Commuter buses featuring local body-builders bodies, mounted on Mercedes-Benz bus chassis have become a common sight in the northern parts of South Africa. Locallybuilt chassis of the Mercedes-Benz OF1730 is gaining in popularity, proving to be robust and reliable. Local operators often opt for the local Brazilian-designed bodies on new OF 1730 chassis especially as demand for bus transport from towns, villages and remote settlements to major centres increase. For gravel roads, sturdily built buses that can withstand dust, heat, rainstorms, floods and potholes are required. Passenger safety and comfort are prime considerations for such companies when it comes to buses. The Mercedes- Benz chassis and local bodies are fully compliant with SABS rollover requirements. This ensures that the residual area of the vehicle – the area where the passengers are situated – will not be intruded upon in normal accident situations. Again with the public transport demands of 2010 in mind the Mercedes-Benz O 500 RSD 1725 with city bus specification has made its mark. This economical bus offers efficiencies that have made these buses renowned worldwide to operators, and now offer affordable transport to the southern African region. The Bus & Coach department at DaimlerChrysler is offering bus driver training in a bid to improve local safety training in line with the safety programmes offered by DaimlerChrysler AG. "We have a full product line up for 2007, including product services, finance, insurance and maintenance programmes. With our total commitment to improving our overall package offering to our customers, there are exciting times ahead," said Kobus van Zyl, Divisional Manager, Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles division of DaimlerChrysler SA.
