Thanks goodness the Deputy President had left

THE ANNUAL CONVENTION of the Road Freight Association was held last month at a venue that seemed idyllic for a business getaway of this nature. Topping the attraction stakes was that it had a golf course – an essential for tough business gatherings of this nature. The second was that it bordered the Kruger National Park which meant you would get a good night’s sleep given that your wife’s snoring would be drowned by the throaty roar of lions as they chewed on dead zebras and other tasty tidbits. Amazing how a woman’s snoring rattles the brain yet a lion’s roaring calms the thing. The third was that it had a Spa which meant you wouldn’t have to pretend enjoying giving your wife a back massage when she returned buckled up from a bumpy game-viewing drive into the park. She could get it done...

Talk to us Mr Minister

Monday, 1 August 2011

News image

Phew! I wonder whether Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele expected the avalanche of opposition from all quarters to his statement – widely reported in the media - that he was to ask Cabinet to reduce the top speed limit on South Africa’s roads from 120km/h to 100km/h. His statement came on the day he had visited an accident scene on the N2 between Empangeni and Mtubatuba where 10 people were killed in a crash involving a minibus taxi. In making the statement, he was reported as saying that "there are increasing calls and signs that something drastic needs to be done to arrest the current situation.” One can perhaps understand the emotion which led him to making his suggestion to lower the top speed limit. After all, he had just been walking around a road accident scene where 10 people had ...

It’s time to change tactics if we want to win the game

Friday, 1 July 2011

News image

Listen up ya’awl. Doesn’t that get up your nose when you hear it on American baseball type movies? The team is lagging far behind and they need a huge wake-up call from the coach to prevent them losing that vital game. He gathers them in a circle, squeezes his way into the group, looks at each individual, takes a deep breath and shouts: “OK, listen up ya’awl!” Huh! What else can they do but listen? He’s right there in among them. It’s sort of stating the obvious isn’t it? He then continues: “OK, we‘re losing this game and we need to pick up. Tommy, I want you to stay up-front down the left side and wait for a long ball from Fred while Cliff takes the centre to offset a possible off bounce from the net.” This may sound authoritative but I haven’t a clue what I’m talking about here. It jus...

A Call to Action

News image

In this edition, we bring you feedback on our Brake & Tyre Watch project held in Bloemfontein - and it’s not good news. Of the 26 trucks taken off the road for testing, 22 were served with Discontinuation of Service notices. That’s an 84% failure rate. Do we continue to just accept these disgraceful figures or do we act now to change things in this industry. Please read on… FleetWatch and its fantastic partners have now covered the entire country with the Brake & Tyre Watch project training over 600 traffic officials and inspecting 306 trucks of all shapes and sizes during these exercises. Of these, 202 were served with Discontinuation of Service notices. That’s a 66% failure rate which is totally unacceptable and shows the entire industry up in a bad light. This is a huge pity ...

I'm confused. Where is the priority?

Friday, 1 April 2011

News image

While the Government has already implemented a carbon tax on new motor cars, it is only a matter of time before they impose a similar tax on trucks. However, I’m confused for I see a lot of dirty smoke rising into the air – and it ain’t coming from truck exhausts. So please can someone help me on this for either I’m missing something or otherwise I’m as thick as a plank. (Don't let my wife read this. She’ll confirm it’s definitely the latter). Given that dinosaurs are millions of years old – except in Zimbabwe where there is a young one thriving at a mere 87 years old – it wasn’t long ago that global warming became a ‘hot’ topic around the world. The destruction of the ozone layer – which few of us had heard of before – became a regular dinner table topic and people soon began to store ...

Thursday, 6 June 2013

News image

Welcome to the FleetWatch truck operating benchmarks for 2013. The schedule covers a variety of typical primary and secondary distribution trucking operations published since February 2004. The objective is to provide operators and shippers (consignors) with a reliable independent guide to trucking costs incurred in the transportation of raw materials, semi-finished and finished products. A thorough understanding of the assumptions and how they are applied in developing the benchmarks is necessary if the various benchmarks are to be informative, beneficial and helpful. While FleetWatch takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the estimates, considerable time and effort has been expended to ensure the various components are realistic and representative of the hypothetical transport t...
