FleetWatch brings you another firstSunday, 28 April 2013 ![]() FleetWatch has notched up many firsts since it was launched some 18 years ago and I am proud to tell you that in this edition, we are bringing to the market yet another first – an experiential trip to Japan. In the past when we sent out a printed version of the monthly magazine, we were unable to bring you anything more than a printed story with pictures unless, of course, we posted a CD or something similar with the magazine. If no-one stole it in the post, you would then have to find a laptop or computer with a CD drive and take it from there. Now, however, with the latest software out of America, we are able to elevate our readers to a new level of interactive reading experience via the use of digital tools to bring the pages to life wherever you are. And hey – this is the first time we... Read more |
SA is but one stall in the flea market of the global villageThursday, 28 March 2013 ![]() I am sitting in a hotel room overlooking a construction site in Munich, Germany. Parked on the site are two trucks - the one a Scania; the other, some Chinese make I can’t make out. On the far side is a building with a huge Knorr-Bremse sign on top of it. Behind me on a table in my room is a press pack. It’s branded MAN, the company hosting me on this trip. Earlier this afternoon, while driving in the centre of Munich, I saw a huge poster on the side of what was obviously an art gallery. It showed a young Nelson Mandela. Under the poster were the words: ‘Aufstieg und Fall der Apartheid – Fotographie und Burokratie des täglichen’. In English, that means: “The rise and fall of apartheid. Photography and bureaucracy of daily life.” Driving back to the hotel after lunch, we passed the impressi... Read more |
“Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation.”Thursday, 28 February 2013 ![]() It was Oscar Wilde who said: “Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation.” I don’t know of one person in this wonderful trucking industry of ours who does not want to see South Africa surge forward as a nation and progress in the most dynamic way to the benefit of all its citizens. I do, however, know of many people in our industry who have expressed grave concern and total discontent as regards the lack of progress of our nation over the past years. The problem, however, is that these concerns have been expressed behind closed doors. The concerns I’ve heard have been mainly directed at the performance of our politicians – both national and provincial - in moving the nation forward. Corruption, the appointment of cadres, family and friends into key positions, the lac... Read more |
Too many accidents - too many deathsMonday, 28 January 2013 ![]() Open Letter to the Minister of Transport, Benedict MartinsFrom: Patrick O’Leary, Managing Editor, FleetWatchDuring the past Festive Season, my family and I travelled far up the coast of Mozambique to a place called Morrungulo for a short holiday. There were no newspapers, no cell phone signals, no internet, no emails. Only long stretches of deserted beach to walk along and enjoy. It was bliss. The world was at peace. The one call I had to make was to Philip Hull, head of Community Medical Services who gives up his Christmas holidays every year to help stranded motorists and accident victims around the Van Reenens Pass area on the N3. I wanted to know how it was going for often the work he does at accident scenes takes its toll on his psyche. I drove into town to find a spot with a cell phon... Read more |
2012 has been a failed year for South AfricaFriday, 30 November 2012 ![]() It’s that time of the year again when we reflect back on the past 12 months and look with hope to the year ahead. In my opinion, looking back on 2012, the trucking industry has had to operate in a climate where its interests – and those of the nation as a whole – were shelved and became totally irrelevant when compared to the scrappy manoeuvring of our so called political leaders in the run up to the ANC’s Mangaung conference. It was a year when South Africa reached the bottom of the barrel in terms of the country’s national interests being taken into account. What we saw instead was an ANC circus where Ring-master Zuma failed dismally to impress the audience and give them their money’s worth. Equally dismal were the performances of the various other acts brought into the ring by thi... Read more |
Truck Operating Benchmarks - Feb 2013Thursday, 28 February 2013 ![]() Welcome to the FleetWatch Truck Operating Benchmarks 2013. The schedule covers a variety of typical primary and secondary distribution trucking operations. The objective is to provide operators and shippers (consignors) with a reliable independent guide to trucking costs incurred in the transportation of raw materials, semi-finished and finished products. A thorough understanding of the assumptions and how they are applied in developing the benchmarks is necessary if the various elements are to be informative, beneficial and helpful. While FleetWatch takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the estimates, considerable time and effort has been expended to ensure the various components are realistic and representative of the hypothetical transport tasks contained in the schedule. Updated... Read more |
