CARING TRUCKING

IT WAS ENVISAGED that this addendum to the story would be titled ‘Journey’s End’ but like most endings, it was just another beginning. Jennifer Des-Fountain reports that the food relief convoy did not experience any problems at all. “The border was well organised and we were let through all road blocks without any problems. In fact, the whole trip was easy and happy.”

What started as a small gesture of kindness grew into incredible support from so many that the trip became 10 people, four vehicles, a truck, and six tons of food.

Des-Fountain says: “Meeting the 27 families and 163 villagers, sharing their suffering, their smiles, their pride and humility, their commitment to survive through all odds and the huge gratitude they had for our small contribution to their lives, has inspired us to do this trip again.

“The plan is to take food, clothing, vegetable seed and fertilizer for planting. This is a hard working farming community with even a 91-year-old Gogo tilling the fields.” She adds that the villagers have planted mealies, watermelon and ground nuts.

“The crop is not ready yet and is of poor quality due to the lack of fertilizer so we plan to assist each family to plant and maintain their own small sustainable vegetable garden. This will give them their nutritional requirements while Zimbabwe hopefully gets its act together.”

Further to this, Des-Fountain is holding a photographic exhibition in Rosebank with pictures taken at the village during the food distribution exercise. Visitors to the expo are being asked to bring donations of food or seeds which will be channelled to the Zimbabwe villagers as well as needy South Africans in Rosebank itself.

A bakkie will receive donations and drop bins will be available for three months in The Mall and at Ninos Restaurant. Caring restaurants in Rosebank will be selling R50 and R200 vouchers to help swell the fund.

Journey’s end or a new beginning? Zimbabwe villagers receive the six tons of food donated by caring South Africans.
