The Fire
Effect...
Over 40 000 hectares of cultivated timber went up in flames in early August, sending shock waves through the timber transport industry, writes
Paul Collings. |

|
Govt's policy incorrect argues
CEO...
Contrary to Government's plan, Garth Bolton, joint CEO of Cargo Carriers and Director of the Road Freight Association, argues that traffic congestion should be relieved by extending investment in road infrastructure.

Special Report on Accidents
Declaring War on
Accidents...
If there's one thing that can cripple a transport operation quicker than you can say truck, it's a truck accident, particularly one involving a hazardous substance that results in environmental damage. Is the transport industry doing enough to mitigate its on-road risk, asks
Paul Collings?
|

|
Best Practice Beats
Accidents...
The South African road freight industry has a degree of cohesion which enables partnerships to be formed to drive road safety initiatives, specifically via the adoption of 'best practice' policies and procedures writes
Paul Collings. |

|
Shouldering
Risk...
Most insurers cross-subsidise higher risk portfolios with lower risk portfolios, effectively making law-abiding operators 'pay' for the industry's outlaws, says OUTsurance's Brand Pretorius. |

|
Steering - the ignored accident
preventor...
According to Ekhard Herrmann, general manager, passenger car division, off-road division and Ecomat O.E. for ZF of South Africa, the lack of attention paid to the maintenance of steering components is a major huge cause for concern.
|

|
Bands on the
Run...
Dangerous Goods vehicles will be required by law to have safety bands fitted to their steering axles.
Paul Collings witnesses a tyre safety band test held at Gerotek under the watchful eye of the DoT. |

|
Hellish
Holes...
Continual reference is made in this issue's special report on accidents/ insurance to the role national and local authorities have to play in ensuring the safe passage of South African road users by ensuring our roads are well maintained. The state of the road down Oliviershoek Pass is shocking and dangerous - and we have the evidence to prove both writes
Patrick O'Leary.
|

|
Walking the safety
talk...
40% of the over 15 000 annual deaths on our roads are pedestrians. While many search for solutions to this problem, it is heartening to see the actions taken by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) to protect pedestrians along its roads writes
Patrick O'Leary.

New Beep Saves
Bucks!...
FleetWatch's technical correspondent Dave Scott takes a closer look at a device that helps prevent wildlife colliding with trucks. |

|
How Safe Is Your #1 Safety
Device...
We ask Stan Bezuidenhout of IBF Investigations: "If so much new truck safety technology is being introduced, why are there still so many truck accidents?" |

|
Special Report on Finance and Insurance
Insuring with
Vision...
Transport operators can lessen the impact of collisions and other on-road mishaps by being properly prepared for their eventuality, says Tom Halliwell of Libra Brokers. |

|
Finance Wisdom from
ABSA...
Accelerated capital spending on infrastructure will boost the transport industry, enabling new entrants into it while creating opportunities for expansion of existing operations. |

|
Sweetening the
Deal...
MAN Financial Services (SA), offers services that help make MAN customers more profitable, writes Paul Collings. |

|
Empowering Truck
Finance...
Offering advice and expertise through integrated services is one way DaimlerChrysler Financial Services is helping to nurture fledgling trucking tycoons. |

|
A highly-developed 56-40-40
formula...
Barloworld Logistics, operating Freightliners at 56t GCM, are achieving 40l /100km hauling cement around Limpopo Province. Even better the tare masses are so low that these rigs are carrying 40t payload - now that's an astounding benchmark, says Eddie Caromba.

WARNING
Excess
Hikes
In this month’s
Operating Cost Benchmarks, Max Braun,
FleetWatch correspondent
and compiler of our Operating Costs, warns operators to expect insurance
excess levels to rise. "Insurers are fed up with the increase in
accidents and incidents partly due to the large and rapid increase in the
vehicle population. However, they are as concerned with bad driving,
mainly speeding and poor handling skills. You can expect excess levels to
rise rapidly and dramatically with immediate effect. This should be noted
when organising cover for new entrants coming into the trucking
business," he writes in his comment. (See
Truck Operating Costs Aug'07)
