With so much said and written in recent months about the stifling effects the global recession is having on South Africa’s trucking industry, it’s hard not to feel despondent. The widespread decline of business activity has affected all aspects of life and trucking, being the lynchpin of the country’s supply chain, has taken a serious knock. Right now, the road freight industry is treading water as memories of recent business euphoria rapidly fade. But, if any industry knows how to survive, it’s commercial truck transport. Adversity is its natural habitat and positivity its lifeblood. While some operators may go to the wall, others are seeking ways to not only sustain their fleets but to expand them. With local banks seemingly reluctant to finance vehicles, the question arises – ‘how does a fleet keep its head above water and prosper?’ Paul Collings hits the money-lenders for some insight.
