BAKERS TO THE RESCUE – Bakers Transport put in an enormous amount of effort to help the AA’s road safety drive. The boxes were collected from the AA offices at Kyalami then taken to the depot for transfer onto long haul rigs for final delivery to the hand-out points. A true commitment to road safety for which we applaud the management and staff.

FleetWatch has always stated that players in this industry are caring people with big hearts. Sure there are those such as the miscreant gross overloaders who don’t give two hoots about anything else apart from lining there own pockets through illegal gains, but they are in the minority. The vast majority are responsible, caring citizens.

This once again came to the fore when FleetWatch received a frantic call at the beginning of December from Gary Ronald of the Automobile Association of South Africa. The AA had prepared 20 000 packs containing road safety messages and information to hand out to motorists over the Festive Season. The problem was, they had underestimated their transport needs and were in a pickle regarding getting the packs to the four truck sops where they were needed – the furthest being the Caltex garage at Van Reenens.

The routes given were frequently travelled by Bakers Transport and it took one call to Abdul Tayob to get the transport in place. When I explained the situation and the fact that it was for a road safety effort, Tayob immediately said they would do it. I then put the two parties in touch with each other and the letter received by FleetWatch from Ronald says it all. Here’s what he wrote:

Just a short note to express our heartfelt thanks to Bakers Transport for assisting us in getting 60 odd boxes of road safety material to four locations on busy holiday routes in December 2004 prior to the builders shutdown long weekend. We had to get 20 000 "goodie bags" to four destinations in a very short space of time on a non-existent budget and when approached all Mr Tayob wanted to know was "who, what and when!" That's what you call support for road safety. Mr Tayob and his staff deserve a bouquet for not only going the extra mile as far as  delivery is concerned, but the manner in which they handled the job was extremely efficient, to put it mildly!

Once again well done - we are proud to be associated with Bakers Transport - a true partner for road safety in SA.

Editor’s Comment: Bakers Transport does deserve a huge bouquet for their generosity and commitment to road safety. Thank you and well done! Your actions contributed to saving lives.

AA SAFETY PACKERS – The AA’s Gary Ronald peeps over the heads of his team of packers who put together 20 000 of these bags for hand-out to motorists and truckers. A sterling effort for road safety.
