The sophisticated nature of diesel injection units demands both skilled technicians and purpose-built equipment to service and maintain them. If South Africa is to lower emissions effectively, all truck engines must combust without releasing particulate matter (soot/smoke). Furthermore, in order to enforce the laws governing vehicle emissions, law enforcement officials must be equipped and trained to identify any vehicles falling foul of the Air Quality Act. The Midas Group has just the thing.

"We're looking forward to September 2007 when the Department of Environmental Affairs will have published the framework for The Environmental Management Air Quality Laws. Vehicle and fleet owners will need to ensure their vehicles comply with the regulations," says Grahame Wharam, technical training manager, Parts Incorporated Africa (PIA), a subsidiary of The Midas Group.

The Midas Group, through PIA, is the sole distributor of Hartridge Test Benches and Smoke-Meters in Sub-Saharan Africa. "Midas has been pre-empting legislation of this nature for a number of years and with the introduction of the latest Model AVM2-PC Diesel Test Bench, we are able to offer the diesel specialist the technology required to service and test the very latest diesel injector components."

The machine comes with updated drive motors for improved torque at low rpm and improved test oil cooling capacity that complies with ISO 4008, EEC and UL/CSA Standards, says Wharam.

"The AVM2-PC is capable of handling diesel pumps with up to 12 cylinders, covering both traditional inline and rotary configurations. It also allows the operator to provide a colour hard copy of all pump performances, both before and after adjustments and is approved by OEM fuel injection manufacturers such as Denso, Delphi (CAV), Stanadyne and Siemens."

Also included in the Hartridge range of test equipment, says Wharam, is the HH701 injector tester, HH720 2 spring injection tester and Common Rail signal units suitable for Bosch, Denso, Delphi and Siemens systems.

"Then there's the Smoke Meter 4, the approved equipment of SABS and local Municipal bodies, both with ISO 4008, EEC and UL/CSA Standard Certification."

The need for more skilled truck technicians and traffic officials cannot be stressed highly enough and The Midas Group in conjunction with PIA at its Meadowdale, Germiston facility are able to equip and educate in the fields of new-generation diesel injection testing and servicing as well as emission control.
