Truck engine makers say oil companies must accelerate the process towards producing cleaner fuels as soon as possible as the current low-quality fuels are blocking efforts to bring the latest technology, low-emission engines into the country.Hino SA GM Casper Kruger says most truck manufacturers, including Hino, are able to provide the latest low emission engine technology but its introduction in South Africa is being hindered by the fuel companies who have yet to initiate upgrades to convert their refineries to produce cleaner fuels. “The automotive industry is asking for this programme to be accelerated,” he asserts. “With our new engine technology, we have the technology to make meaningful reductions to emissions in the atmosphere so now it is up to the fuel producers to speed up the process.” Kruger says the best strategy for fuel suppliers would to make 50 ppm (parts per million) fuel available on a wider geographic basis to permit the use of the latest low emission engine technology. Following this, they should focus on a further downward shift to 10ppm, already available in certain countries. |
