FUEL & LUBES

Government intervention needed

Government intervention is the only way to secure future supplies of refined products (petrol, diesel and jet fuel) from Durban to the inland region beyond 2011 when the new multi-products pipeline (NMPP) comes on stream.

The South African Petroleum Industry Association (Sapia) says once the rail, pipelines, ports and storage depots infrastructure has undergone much needed improvements and the Competition Commission exempts the current practices and agreements that are in place, it will allow interaction between key role players with regard to pipeline operations and facilitate security of supply.

Currently rail, pipelines, ports and storage depots capacity is constrained and as rail is unable to compete effectively, road tankers remain the only reliable method of transporting fuel between Durban and inland markets.
