FUEL & LUBES

Filtering off highway dirt

Although common in on-highway applications, truck engines armed with High-Pressure Common-Rail (HPCR) fuel systems designed to meet the latest emissions standards are a new facet in harsh, unsympathetic, off-highway operating conditions.

A foremost challenge is achieving incisive particle filtration. With three to five injection events per stroke and 3-5μm clearances between the moving parts in the injector, the need to deliver medical-quality fluid to the injectors is critically important.

Cummins Filtration introduced the Fleetguard Pro Fuel Management Systems (Fuel Pro, Diesel Pro, Industrial Pro and Sea Pro) specially designed with such harsh operating conditions in mind.

Fleetguard maintains that its StrataPore media upholds its emulsified water separation efficiency over long periods of time, unlike treated cellulose media which loses its water separation capabilities after being in contact with diesel fuel over a sustained period.

A clear cover feature lets users know exactly when filters need changing which augments preventative maintenance thus reducing maintenance costs and vehicle downtime.

Fleetguard says further that the use of multi-layer StrataPore in all its fuel management systems also enables the Pro Series to deal with very high viscosity fluids making them compatible with alternative fuels such as biodiesel, vegetable oil and other environmentally friendly fuels.

Fleet operators placing new technology vehicles in severe off-highway conditions must be extremely disciplined in maintaining their vehicles and preventing the ingress of dirt and contaminants in the fuel system
