Having started just a decade ago as an inhouse road tanker builder, GRW Engineering (GRW) emerged as a fully-fledged builder to meet a growing demand for quality road tankers. Its reputation for individually designed and constructed stainless steel, aluminium and steel tankers grew rapidly. The large number of prestigious southern African clients using GRW tankers has propelled the company into market leadership. Likewise, international clients based in Europe and the UK confirm their satisfaction with the product.

How it started?
Back in 1989 after a successful career as an educator lecturing advanced mathematics at the Port Elizabeth Technikon, Gerhard (Gerrie) van der Merwe decided it was time to consider a career change. When his first choice for a new challenge did not come to fruition, he accepted an invitation to participate in his brother in-law's Worcester-based road tanker transport business.

About three years after acquiring full control of the business, Gerrie was joined by his two sons Wentzel and Gerhard (jnr). Roussouw van Eeden, a life-long family friend who grew up with Wentzel, also joined the company.

Then it happened! After taking delivery of a new road tanker built by a prominent company at the time, the three young entrepreneurs expressed their dismay at the poor workmanship and generally unacceptable finishes by suggesting to Gerrie that they seriously consider building their own tanks. Gerrie needed to be sure there would be commitment to such a venture. He offered to provide the material if the young trio would attempt to build a scale model steel tank to his satisfaction. After several months of dedicated and concerted effort a tank that met their collective expectation and standards emerged.

With great enthusiasm, GRW Engineering was born in 1996 with a mission to build world-class road tankers comparable with the highest international manufacturing and quality standards. Almost immediately, GRW came under pressure to commence building tankers for prominent users in the wine transportation industry.

To gain an appropriate understanding of the design concepts, production methods and procedures which form the backbone of GRW tankers, it is necessary to detail some of the philosophy that drives their commitment to achieve the highest levels of customer retention by exceeding the expectations of the most demanding users of GRW products. This includes product innovation, trained and motivated employees committed to life-long learning, working closely with clients, teamwork and dedication to the maintenance of production and operating standards.

Products
The GRW product range includes stainless steel, aluminium and steel tandem and tridem semi-trailer tankers and a range of fuel trailer tankers suitable for any product category. The current GRW tanker population includes tankers hauling liquid fuels, solvents, chemicals, black products, edibles and dual products. In addition, you will see skeletal trailers with demountable tanks as well as insulated and heated tanks emerging from the GRW stable.

"If you want someone to buy
your products you must
have a reason why
and a product plus".

These sage words are credited to Anton Rupert, one of South Africa's most respected and revered industrial icons. If you stop to ask almost any GRW road tanker user why they choose this company's products, Rupert's words echo in the back of your mind.
