Mink and manure lorry - The MAN TGL can be used as a people and horse carrier. It has to be safe as possible.

Europe's truck manufacturers are highly competitive when it comes to developing safety technologies for their customers. MAN has sophisticated safety gear in all its new models.

"All the latest MAN products, namely the TGL, TGM and TGA line of trucks offer 100% Trucknology, which results in improved productivity, comfort, reliability and safety," explains Mark Gavin, product manager TGL and TGM, MAN Truck and Bus South Africa. "All TGL and TGM vehicles utilise a state of the art Electronic Braking System (EBS), which incorporates an ABS system, brake lining harmonization, Brake Assistant and engine brake function. Extra support is provided in the form of the exhaust brake (EVB) that goes into action automatically when you depress the brake."

The intelligent BrakeMatic system coordinates the functions of the EBS, says Gavin. "The EBS system enhances braking response by 0.3 seconds - At 80kmh this is equivalent to 6 metres shorter stopping distance, which could mean a matter of life and death or serious injury. The TGL and TGM products also have a back up brake system which is equivalent to that utilised in the predecessor product, the M2000."

When it comes to road-holding, adds Gavin, specific high quality tyres are specified as standard on various applications of TGL and TGM vehicles. "In other words," he says, "tyres are specified for the job the vehicle is designed for, be it an in-town operation, long distance or a mixed service vehicle, such as a tipper or concrete mixer."

Computer early warning systems are integral to the safety system, Gavin says. "Brake Assistant, incorporated in the EBS offers a safety warning that is displayed on the dash board in clear text. A brake circuit pressure gauge is also included. What's more, TGL and TGM trucks are fitted with rectangular H7 headlamps, which utilises free form reflector technology."

All Trucknology-generation products are fitted with 3-point safety belts for drivers and the two co-drivers or crew. "In addition, the MAN cab in itself is a safety cell. The stable cab structure safeguards the drivers' survival area in the event of a collision. Special cab mountings are incorporated into the cab, which are designed to deform in the event of a head on collision and reduce the intensity of the impact. In this regard, the entire cab moves backwards increasing the deceleration distance and drastically reducing the impact of the cabs occupants," concludes Gavin.

Inside the TGL, much has been added to make the driver more aware of what's happening with the vehicle.
