CAPITAL AIR IS a company with a number of divisions, one of which is vehicle tracking and recovery which, apart from having its own vehicle tracking system, works with a number of independent tracking companies, including DigiCore Holdings, to recover stolen and hijacked vehicles.

The company has a successful network of ground recovery teams placed around the country, eight of which are based in Johannesburg. Furthermore, air recovery teams can be called out when necessary to ensure a successful recovery. On this point, Capital Air can boast of having the largest privately owned fleet of helicopters in South Africa - 10 of them.

The guy who started it all is João Vinagre, an extraordinary man who has more than 35 000 flying hours to his name - arguably the highest of any helicopter pilot in South Africa.

The teams are on call 24/7 and work closely with the police on their operations. There is a vast amount of information sharing between Capital Air recovery teams and the police as well as between ground and air units  of both parties. As executive manager Ferdi Gobey puts it: “More teamwork means more eyes” - and more eyes means a better success rate.

And this success rate is something to be proud of with the teams recording up to 20 successful vehicle recoveries in a day making this company a true asset in South Africa’s fight against crime.
