India buys local rubber giant

ANOTHER indicator of South Africa’s growing attractiveness to foreign capital is the recent purchase of Dunlop Tyres International (Pty) Ltd (a true SA success story) by listed Indian tyre manufacturer Apollo Tyres Ltd, ranked 16th globally and a sub-continental leader in truck tyre production. Dunlop CEO, Mike Hankinson says, "Dunlop is looking forward to working with Apollo in order to extract benefits for all parties." The buyout, seen in the context of the relationship Apollo has with truck OE Ashok Leyland and other Indian commercial vehicle manufacturers, could perhaps be construed as a sign of new Indian truck imports that will require a solid local tyre supply and support infrastructure such as Dunlop has.
