EYE ON BRAKES & TYRES

BRAKE WATCH INSPECTION SHEET

FleetWatch has received a request from a reader for us to publish the brake ‘check list’ used in our BrakeWatch exercise (see February 2006 edition) so that all can benefit from it. I think that’s a great idea so here it is compliments of Wabco, ACSAMag and FleetWatch. Use it to check the vehicles in your own fleet.

1 Check Air Suzie’s are not broken or kinked & couplings non interchangeable

Check colour coding Red-Emergency, Yellow-Service and line tags are correct

Check Electrical Suzie’s are not broken or not coupled i.e. brake lights/
indicators etc.

Check for Trailer Data and Loadsensing Data Plates are present on the vehicle.

Check park brake is functioning – valve does not leak after application and release

Check rubber hoses for chafing or tears or perishing

Drain Air reservoirs and check for excessive moisture

Check Loadsensing rubber linkages are secure and not perished / down rod connected

Check correct slack adjuster hole is used on each axle i.e. same left & right

Check that all booster sizes are same on axle i.e. left & right

Check Pushrods (bent or rubbing on actuator casing or mounting & clevis rub on slacks)

Check all visible mechanical components are OK ( susp springs, air bags, auto slack, etc)

Check all service foundation brakes are functioning
