1985: 

Toyota launches it’s own vehicle research and development facility in Eston, becoming the first South African manufacturer with such a facility. 

1986:  1 000 000 Toyotas sold in South Africa!
1989: 

Toyota wins international Hino and TMC Parts and Service awards. 

1990: 

Toyota Lease is created, offering full maintenance leasing with full Toyota dealer back-up and servicing support.

1990:

 Toyota SA celebrates 10 years of market leadership   

1991:

Dr Albert Wessels passes away on 22 July 1991 at the age of 82 and his son, Bert Wessels takes over as executive chairman of Toyota SA. 

1992: 

Toyota SA Trucks becomes the number one commercial vehicle manufacturer in SA. 



Freddie Mercury

World History:
1985

Mobile telephones are launched in Europe.  

1986: 

‘Iron Man’ Mike Tyson, aged 20, becomes the youngest ever world heavyweight boxing champion. 

1986: 

The US space shuttle Challenger fails just after lift-off, killing all seven astronauts. 

1989: 

Several hundred pro-democracy demonstrators are massacred by the Chinese Army on Tiananmen Square Beijing. 

1990: 

Namibia becomes a fully independent republic after 23 years of armed struggle. 

1991:

Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen, dies of AIDS.

1993: 

A massive car bomb explodes in the parking garage of New York’s World Trade Centre. 



Nelson Mandela

SA History:
1985:

Koeberg nuclear power station comes on line.

1987: 

SAA’s Boeing 747 Helderberg, plunges into the ocean near Mauritius, killing all on board. 

1988: 

Wally Hayward, aged 79, finishes the 90km Comrades Marathon. 

1990:  Nelson Mandela walks to freedom after 26 years of imprisonment. 
1992: 

SA strike bowler Alan Donald is adjudged Cricketer of the Year. 

1993: 

SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani dies in a hail of bullets outside his Johannesburg home. 

1994: 

South Africans of all colours cast their votes in the country’s first ever fully democratic election.

1985:  Teen idol Michael J Fox stars in Back to the Future.
1986:  Henry Cele stars in Bill Faure’s television epic Shaka Zulu.
1987: 

Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise star in the hit movie Rain Man, the moving story of an autistic genius. 

1989:  The Japanese firm Sony buys Hollywood’s Columbia Pictures.
1993: 

Tom Hanks gives a star performance in Philadelphia, the first major Hollywood feature about AIDS.
