Meet our partners - Gammid Trading

According to Elaine Midgley, managing director of Gammid Trading, in her company, the demand for aluminium in the transport industry is growing by 4% per annum. Started by Elaine in 1993, Gammid has branches in Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal (Pinetown), Cape Town and George supplying semi-fabricated aluminium and stainless steel to the engineering and industrial sectors.

"Our success has been founded on our attention to client needs," says Elaine. "This means consistently delivering material to customer's requirements on time, remaining abreast of market developments, new products and the changing parameters in our industry. By really listening to our customers, we can create and manage a service catering to their needs."

Gammid's expertise lies in servicing a wide spectrum of industries such as transport, mining, engineering, petrochemical, chemical, signage and hollowware. "Our staff has extensive knowledge and skills to provide the services required by these industries," explains Elaine. "Whether it's aluminium sheets and coils, aluminium treadplates, aluminium extrusions or stainless steel products, we always offer a tailor-made solution to our clients, based expressly on their individual requirements."

With customers like Tank Clinic, Gammid makes trucking components that help reduce vehicle tare mass. "Aluminium mudguards, fuel tanks and truck boxes are becoming increasingly popular among trailer builders," says Elaine. "The anti-corrosive nature of aluminium is another strong selling point for the material."

Like so many other areas within the broader trucking domain, there exists a shortage of skills. "We need more designers who know how to work with aluminium," says Elaine. "Engineers should be given more information and interest should be created before they go out into their field. Student engineers at the universities and technical colleges should be targeted. It's a growing industry and these issues need to be addressed urgently.

As regards the current surge in aluminium demand reaching a ceiling, she says this is now envisaged in this industry. "It's a big challenge but an exciting one. This country still has a long way to go with aluminium in transport."

There was a song made famous by The Carpenters: "We've only just begun." That's the tune everyone seems to be whistling in Gammid.
