October is a strong
month for truck sales

GOING AGAINST THE recent trend, October 2007 was a surprisingly strong month for new medium and heavy truck sales in Southern Africa. The January-October returns reflected a 12.8% increase compared with the same 10 months of 2006. This is a marked improvement on the 11.6% increase recorded for January- September, and indicates that the growth for the full year may remain above 10%. This is higher than previously forecast and well ahead of the performance of the lighter sectors of the vehicle market. The full year’s analysis will appear in the first issue of Fleetwatch for 2008.

Erratum

Done but not yet dusted

The 2007 Spirit of Africa Trophy will hold many special memories for Freightliner and its special customers. FleetWatch ran a story on the event in its October edition and while the event may well be done, it seems the journalist who wrote the article, Paul Collings, was not quite dusted when he wrote the article. And the dust was in his eyes!

Remorsefully, he admits to the oversight of mistaking Abe and Celia Uys of Crossroads Distribution for Jannie and Cheryl Burger of Slabbert Burger. Here then are the corrections... apologies to both couples for any inconvenience caused.

More. . .

Facelift for Top Iveco Dealer . . .

While the brick, glass and aluminium do have a sizable role to play in the promotion of truck sales, dealership launches are really about people getting together to network, strengthen affiliations and have a bit of a party. The roof wetting of the upgraded Truck Centre Wadeville was no exception. Paul Collings got his face lifted.

On the right track . . .
Not long after the roof-wetting of the upgraded Truck Centre Wadeville came the opening of another Iveco dealer, this time in Midrand where over 100 guests gathered to celebrate the birth of the new R25-million Midrand Iveco Centre. Patrick O'Leary was one of the guests.

Volvo Europe story

The Politics of Mobility . . .

The effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on climate change are sounding big alarm bells in high offices around the world with visions of an apocalyptic future looming as close as just a few decades away. The European Union, via its Transport Forum (ETF), is collaborating with OEMs to find sustainable solutions to mobility problems, writes Paul Collings, from the Volvo-sponsored 2007 ETF held in Brussels recently.

Special Report

Greening the Bottom Line . . .

A look beyond the obvious business benefits delivered by Fleet Management systems to a far more universal positive spin-off; how FM systems can help conserve our planet by reducing fuel consumption and thereby cutting the volumes of greenhouse gas emissions from trucks.

Navigating the Bleeding Edge . . .

While 2007 saw a host of new innovations enhance FM system functionality in general, the vehicle tracking industry has set its sights on integrating its services with FM technologies. Paul Collings reports on the year’s FM and tracking highlights.

FM goes Green . . .

Apart from the rising price of diesel and a shortage of skilled drivers, the local transport industry faces new pressure abroad, notably the need for vehicles to burn cleaner, writes Paul Collings.

Into the Heart of Darkness . . .

Trucks running freight between South Africa’s business hubs and other sub-equatorial African nations are high-value juggernauts that need to be under constant surveillance to ensure they reach their destination safely and on time, Paul Collings discovers.

Back in the centre of the hive . . .

Rentrak Vehicle Recovery Services is back where it belongs in the centre of the hive of activity that is Rand Airport. Patrick O’Leary paid a visit to the company to check out its new pad and found Dave Renton, MD of Rentrak, a happy man.

SatNav saves. . .

Satellite-based GPS units are standard fitments in many luxury vehicles nowadays but what about commercial vehicles?

Technical Watch

Torque convertors & ‘clutch-fudge’ . . .

FleetWatch technical correspondent Dave Scott reports from a special fleet owner and press event in Hungary where Allison Transmission guests could drive a 20- truck fleet in diverse operating conditions and get first-hand experience.

Dangerous goods column

Part 3 - Operational Requirements for Road Vehicles . . .
