| A
lot of local companies have held driver championship events during this past year. What is not widely known, however, is that BP South Africa has been hosting a series of international events, which are all leading up to the Grand Final being held in Cape Town in November. In other words, our local BP guys have brought the world's top drivers to our local shores to do battle. |
 |
It's a complicated structure but three events have already been held locally. The first was where the top drivers from South Africa, Namibia and Botswana (known as the South African Cluster) competed against each other to find winners to go forward into the Africa, Middle East, Russia Caspian Regional (AMRC) event which was held at Gerotek on 2nd and 3rd September 2005. Also competing at Gerotek were the winners from the Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania competition - known as the Rest of Africa Cluster. The pictures featured on this page show various scenes from the competitions.
The whole series follows the success of the 2003 International Driving Championship held in Vienna, Austria, when BP decided to extend the participation group-wide and also include light vehicles. The idea was for various Cluster events to be held around the world and these would feed into 1 of 4 Regional Events. It's the winners from these Regional events that will now be advancing to the Grand Final in Cape Town in November.
The immediate purpose of the competition is to identify and recognise the most professional and safety aware drivers in the BP workforce. The overall objective is to motivate drivers throughout the BP workforce to achieve even higher levels of driving safety performance and to build awareness and understanding of safe driving techniques and behaviours which all can adopt in their driving related activities.
FleetWatch will be travelling to Cape Town to be at the finals and will report on the event for our readers. Until then, well done to the BP guys in South Africa. You did a great job two years ago and it looks like you're doing an even better job now. Way to go!
