Management support Unrealistic targets – and unsustainable benchmarks usually result in confusion and disagreement between key employees and management. Inconsistent payouts – erratic payout of bonuses and awards results in suspiscion and disappointment often associated with a lack of communication and follow up of progress and performance. Training inappropriate and/or insufficient training to establish capability and competence to achieve the targets. True motivation is providing someone with the incentive that encourages them to achieve a goal they have selected for themselves. The incentive is anything that an individual feels (believes) will satisfy their motive (drive or “hot button”). Management’s role is to provide the tools and climate in which drivers can succeed in becoming true professionals. When management fails to create and sustain this climate then all their efforts to improve fuel usage, reduce accidents, improve vehicle utilisation and customer service will be in vain.
