There aren't many global players in the hydraulic telescopic tipping arm market; in fact you can count them on one hand. This is largely due to the highly specialised and capital intensive nature of this sector of automotive engineering. Nonetheless, competition between the key players in this market is on the up, especially for market share in emerging economies. Italy's top hydraulic tipper lift manufacturer, Binotto, is making inroads in South Africa and Paul Collings attended its World Press Day just outside Venice.

Specialising in the manufacture, distribution and support of tipper truck and trailer hydraulic systems, Binotto has built a solid reputation for product quality over more than 50 years. The World Press Day held in Stanghella, Italy, was attended by trucking journalists from Russia, Poland, Spain, the UK, Germany, France and of course, FleetWatch from South Africa.

Hosting proceedings was Binotto marketing director, Paolo Possia, who, addressing the press contingent in the new hydraulic cylinder factory, said, "this new plant is symbolic of Binotto's capacity to react to changing demand and meet it."

The 10 000m³ facility, one of three plants, was completed in six months at a cost of €15-million and will produce some 47 000 units per annum to meet growing demand from over 60 countries around the world.

End to end product
"The fact that Binotto only produces hydraulic truck equipment gives it a degree of independence not matched by competitors who produce various other products as well as hydraulic systems. There are no external elements which could possibly disturb the production process," said Possia.

Binotto's primary selling proposition is its 'one-shot composable' solution - where customers can purchase all the necessary hydraulic components from one source.

"Binotto products are designed for tipping trucks, trailers and semi-trailers up to 100
tons GVM (gross vehicle mass) and include front-end and under-body, telescopic cylinders, wet kits, oil tanks, pumps, PTOs and valves," Possia explained. "What makes Binotto cylinders unique is that there are no welds on stop points between stages. This makes them extremely strong, safe and reliable."

Covering the bottom end
While Binotto products meet the needs of heavy truck transport, light commercial tipper bodies are equipped with products from sister company, Mariz (both are subsidiaries of holding company, Marfin).

"This merger saw the birth of a solid and important group, the only one in Europe to design and produce such a vast quantity and variety of telescopic cylinders capable of covering the widest range of load-bearing requirements, varying from 2 to 100 tons," says Possia. "Each company maintains and develops its own specialized products, increasing their respective ranges, using only high yield steel with no welds."

Roll-hardened tubes are exceptionally smooth with clearances of less than 0.07mm helping prevent side load damage and bending.

SA representation
The boom in South Africa's transport market has not gone unnoticed by Binotto who are represented locally by Truck Equipment. "The complete ancillary drive kit from Binotto compliments our existing range of products," says Truck Equipment's technical director, Andrew Ernst. "We've had a positive response to the Binotto product range in the three years we've promoted it. It is a top-end brand and well recognised for its quality."

Ernst adds that apart from tipper applications, the hydraulic systems are also being used on compactors and powder tankers. "There is a weight saving on the high pressure range of telescopic lifts and the fact that all cylinder stages are chromed adds significantly to their longevity," Ernst says.
