The rapid growth experienced by the truck transport industry in recent years has drawn foreign imports of various descriptions into the country, including a vast basket of trailer components. Time is the tester of all things and in many instances, these imported products are not ideally suited to southern Africa's harsh operating environment.
One local supplier of truck trailer axles, TSE Big Max, believes that its latest axle innovation provides long-haul cross border transporters with a durable and low maintenance solution to meet Africa's taxing roads.

The Big Max Pro Torq Axle has been tested in the worst of road conditions north of our borders says Zaid Moosa, marketing manager at TSE Big Max. "The tests prove them to be a huge success and we found that there is now a demand for the new axle which offers many benefits to fleet owners, especially when traveling extremely long routes into Africa."
According to Moosa, the Pro Torque axle reduces maintenance while extending tyre life and is ideal for forestry, sugar cane and long distance applications, as well as rugged and extreme cross border conditions.
"The main feature of the axle is the nut which is used in the hub assembly," he says. "Basically, with the Pro Torque nut, there is no longer a need for a castle nut, an axle washer and a split pin. There are several advantages to having a nut of this nature, like longer tread life because the axle controls axial motion, holding bearing end-play near zero while maintaining exact cup and cone alignment on the spindle.
"The Pro-Torq axle delivers the adjustment precision which experts agree is needed to maximise tyre life. Other advantages include extended wheel seal and bearing service intervals, accurate wheel end sensor monitoring of wheel speeds on ABS, trouble-free performance from steer, drive and trailer axle wheel ends and speedy installation with the Pro Torque nut which takes the guesswork out of bearing adjustment with no dial indicator required."
FleetWatch would be keen to hear from operators who have used these axles.
