Action List to Improve Fuel, Filtration & Lubrication (FFL)

  1. Audit the situation on the ground. What may be the intention - or policy - of the company may not be happening in terms of FFL.

  2. Review the FFL policies. If there is no written policy, establish one and communicate it to buyers, drivers and all operating staff.

  3. Review FFL standards. OEM specifications are the benchmark and any deviation from these have to be fully justified.

  4. Move to engine energy usage as the prime criteria. Fuel consumption, not distance, is the way to go on all FFL subjects.

  5. Avoid a blanket approach. Trucks working in the Sabie forests or in the Free State will require different FFL servicing to those working to the north of our borders.

  6. Adopt the Marty Barris’ Total FiltrationTM approach. Do not see FFL issues in isolation of each other.

  7. Use the resources of FFL suppliers. They are more than willing to assist with operational reports and audits to enable you to take charge of the situation.

  8. Train, train, train! Get out of the grease monkey paradigm as staff using FFL products need continuous training.

  9. Maintain meticulous records. It is the usage of FFL products that is important. Measure the incidents and not the monetary value.
