Cover Story

Moving the Tree of Light
There's a huge Christmas tree that lights up every night in the Johannesburg Zoo. It's called the Tree of Light. More than that, it is a Tree of Hope for it will bring to many people joy and comfort via funds raised from the public. And it would not be there if it were not for the kind generosity of a trucker writes Patrick O'Leary.

The big gun is here
It's a poetic introduction with a throaty voice on the video waxing lyrical about how she shines in the morning sun as she greets you. The bubble of romance bursts when the voice boldly describes her as representing 30 years of 'Roaring Thunder'. This ain't no lady. It's Scania's King of the Road. And he - not she - has arrived in South Africa writes Patrick O'Leary.

Auto Africa Expo 2002 is on

Auto Africa Expo, South Africa's premier automotive industry exhibition and conference, will again aim to be the motoring highlight of 2002 when it is staged at the Expo Centre south of Johannesburg, from Monday 21st October through to Sunday 27th October. And the trucking industry will be there.

Killer load-straps
How many times do we listen to traffic reports telling of load spills causing traffic jams? How many times do we see cargo shifting on a truck load-deck as we travel the 'freeways'? Too often, writes FleetWatch technical correspondent Dave Scott who contends that this is not surprising seeing that inferior load straps are being sold into our market. Straps are a safety critical item that operators should be more aware of.

Legislation Watch

The cops are wrong again
Another incident where the cops are once again wrong has been brought to the attention of FleetWatch. In this case, problems are being experienced in certain areas where traffic officers are issuing "tickets" to operators of leased vehicles which are not registered and licensed in the Province in which these vehicles are temporarily operating. FleetWatch correspondent on legislation, Jack Webster, sets the record straight.

N3TC - Four lane milestone
G
auteng and the KwaZulu-Natal coast are now linked with a four-lane highway for the entire route. A notable milestone for the N3TC - the concessionaire for the construction and maintenance of the 418 km stretch of the N3 between Heidelberg and Cedara.

Late News Flash

The Third Force enters

After a somewhat protracted endeavour to get official approval for its product, a third player has entered the South African reflective tape business - more common known as 'conspicuity contour tape'.
