Let's learn from
history...

Minister of Transport Dullah Omar feels the time is
right to consider creating a level playing field for
fair price competition between rail and road haulage. He
obviously wants to attract more goods to rail. History
is a great teacher and we urge the Minister - and
everyone else involved in the debate - to learn from the
mistakes of the past and not to repeat them. Stephanie
Platt reports.

Road/Rail cost
comparison...
Given that the core of the Minister of Transport's
statement regarding creating a shift in the balance
between road and rail was focussed around price with no
mention of service, FleetWatch conducted a quick survey
among road freight companies to determine price and
service comparisons. The Railways was then approached
with the same request. |

What
the Minister said...
We bring you the extract from the Minister of
Transport's speech to the National Council of Provinces
where he refers to supporting rail by creating a level
playing field for fair price competition between it and
road haulage. |

The other side of the suspension
coin...
In the May edition of FleetWatch, we carried an article
in which Goodyear Industrial urged for the replacement
of steel springs with air springs on trucks and trailers
for better operational efficiencies. FleetWatch decided
to check out if the promises matched the reality. |

Get the most from that engine...
Extracting the maximum in terms of economy and
productivity from an engine is entirely dependent on the
way specific diesel engines are understood and handled
by both a driver and his supervisor. Given this, it is
time for both parties to link hands over the engine
writes FleetWatch technical correspondent Dave
Scott. |
