AMERICA KEEPS TRUCKIN'
In America's darkest hour, the trucking industry of the USA opened its heart and came to the fore magnificently in helping not only those in New York and Washington D.C. but the entire country. By their actions, members of this industry proved to be corporate citizens of the highest order. FleetWatch managing editor, Patrick O'Leary, pieces together a few of their actions to bring our readers this special report on how, when the whole world came to a stop on that fateful day on September 11th, American truckers kept on rolling.

A new world for TRUCKING
While trucks quickly started rolling into New York and Washington D.C. hauling donations for the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks, trucks entering the USA from Canada ground to a halt at the border posts due to stringent security checks. Such delays will most certainly have an adverse impact on the economies of these countries over the long term but the good news is that the technology exists to speed up the checks so as to get the trucks rolling again writes Patrick O'Leary.

FITTING TRIBUTE |
| IN TRIBUTE to the sterling work firemen and other rescue workers have done in searching for survivors in the rubble of the former World Trade Centre in New York, the New York Stock Exchange has had various representative of these groups - including a sniffer dog - swing the gavel to open and close trading on the stock exchange. If
FleetWatch be allowed to put forward its humble suggestion, we would deem it fitting that a representative of the American trucking industry - perhaps the CEO of the American Trucking Associations - be handed the gavel in symbolic recognition of the fine work this industry has done in helping the nation during its time of need.
FleetWatch will put it forward to the New York Stock Exchange.

including South Africa where Unitrans is the authorised service provider -

the form of $2-million in cash and $3-million of in-kind logistical and
transportation services, plus scores of UPS volunteers who were assisting

As your
fellow truckers in South Africa, we pay tribute to the
truckers of America for the sterling work you did in
coming to the aid of victims of the terrorist attacks in
New York and Washington on September 11th and the days
following. By your actions, you proved that you are nation
builders of the highest order. From South Africa, we
salute you and assure you of our prayers as you strive to
keep the wheels of America moving. |

EDITOR'S
NOTE |
FLEETWATCH MUST
stress that at the time of writing, the USA had sent a massive military force into the Gulf in preparation for 'war'. It is totally conceivable that, by the time you read this, the whole situation may well have changed - and we can only pray that it has changed for the better.
FleetWatch, as a monthly magazine, cannot keep up with daily events but all material in this feature was accurate and relevant at the time of writing.
I also wish to thank the American Trucking Associations and other parties in the USA and Canada who helped me source information for the compilation of this feature. God bless you all.
