A Big Turn On

It's funny what turns different people on but, judging from the lyrical piece below, it is obvious that an engine remanufacturing plant is what turns FleetWatch correspondent Andrew Parker on big time. I think it is great for it brings passion and feeling to the arena of mechanics and thus decided to share his enthusiasm with our readers. Nice piece Andrew. By the way, did you get to kiss the spanner.

There is something akin to a feeling of times gone by when you walk into a big diesel engine shop. That smell of oil and water, hot metal and machinery heralds from another world and another time. Once inside with the doors closed behind you, there is none of the frenetic rush you find outside in the streets and on the highways. The pace is quiet and exacting. There is no road rage here. Machines hum and grind and technicians in blue overalls work with precision and purpose. You can feel the sense of achievement when a big diesel engine kicks into life on the dynamometer. It arrives on its last legs as a hulk of used and often abused iron and steel. That is, until the engineers carefully strip it down and with meticulous care and attention, give it a new lease on life. Now, as it sits idling powerfully on the test bed with a bunch of technicians bustling around like doctors around a needy patient checking gauges and making adjustments, it is once again ready for the long haul.
