Mozambique ups logistics ante

The port of Maputo is becoming an important logistics hub in the SADC region with a sustained increase in the number of containers moving through the port.

Mozambique International Port Services (MIPS) is refurbishing cranes, expanding the terminal area and installing new equipment at the Port of Maputo to ensure it is able to cope with increased container volumes moving through the port.

These developments follow a sustained increase in the number of containers moving through the port. MIPS reports that 13 700 TEU passed through the port during November 2009 compared with an average of 6 000 TEU per month for the period January to June 2009. This follows record months for August (8 500 TEU), September (12 500 TEU) and October (11 400 TEU). MIPS say the higher volumes are due to the increased commitment by importers, exporters and services providers, as well as the increased shipping line services to the port of Maputo.
