The saga of the inconsiderate transporters
By Patrick O'Leary

It's tough at the top when you have to make decisions like raising the price of fuel by 72% such as President Robert Mugabe's government in Zimbabwe has recently done.

However, if you think it's tough at that level, try being on the receiving end of such decisions - that's real tough as evidenced by the Zimbabwean transporter pictured alongside this story who can no longer afford to buy diesel - when there is any - but has made a plan to get the bread delivered on time to the President's breakfast table.                                                 more...

A first move for Volvo

Calvert Worldwide Movers has taken delivery of its first Volvo FM10 4x2 360hp truck tractor. The unit is also the first in the fleet to be branded in the new livery since the company was bought out by the global relocations organisation, The Crown Worldwide Group, in October last year.

While bringing Volvo into the fold is a new move for the local Calvert operation, it is one taken with confidence based on the fact that the Crown Worldwide network of relocation companies has branches in more than 44 countries, many of which operate these units in their fleets.                                    more...

Quotable Quote

"Whenever I watch a driver maneuver a big rig around some impossibly tight corner, or work his way effortlessly around the current of a freeway, I feel like applauding. To control something so huge, to know the road so well, to ride so high above the rest of the world must be thrilling, at least at first, at least for a while."

Mary McNamara, staff writer for the Los Angeles Times in an April 4 article.

Shining Like A Diamond

In a first for the South African trucking industry, Toyota SA Trucks has been awarded a Diamond Arrow award by Professional Management Review (PMR) magazine.

Diamond Arrows are awarded to companies who have been rated as "outstanding" in PMR's surveys undertaken between April 2000 and April 2001. The companies have been awarded either three or more Golden Arrows during this time, or they have a score of 4.10 out of a possible 5.                                      more...

ERC gets Armscor contract

Gerrie Visagie, MD of Engine Rebuild Centre (ERC), Barloworld's Perkins Engines dealer in Nelspruit, is walking around with a big smile on his face - and so he should be seeing that his company has just been appointed by Armscor to rebuild its engines and transmissions.

An obviously 'chuffed' Visagie says he is proud his company's excellence has, yet again, been recognised by a major concern.

Big move for Freightliner

It's big, it's bold and it's a solid commitment by McCarthy Motor Holdings to the future of Freightliner in South Africa. We're talking about the new Freightliner Truck Centre in Zandfontein.

The opening of this centre follows close on the heels of McCarthy Motor Holdings acquiring the Freightliner truck franchise servicing Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Northern Province, the Northwest Province, Botswana and Swaziland.

McCarthy Motor Holdings is now one of three Freightliner dealers in South Africa and the allocation of the new purpose-built centre dealership says a lot for McCarthy's serious intent.
