OPERATORS RUNNING into Namibia are warned that the Namibian Road Traffic authorities are applying the regulations relating to vehicles displaying the distinguishing sign of the country of their registration.

Prosecutions have already been introduced for non-compliance with Regulation 48(5)(e) of the Road Traffic Regulations which were published in the Republic of Namibia Government Gazette No. 2503 on 30 March 2001.

This Regulation states:
48(5) No person may operate a motor vehicle on a public road -
(e) which is registered in any country other than Namibia, without displaying the distinguishing sign of the country of registration allocated in terms of the convention.

In terms of the International/United Nations Convention on Road Traffic, the sign allocated to South Africa is:
ZA

Operators, or anyone taking a South African vehicle into Namibia, must display one of these signs at the rear of the vehicle. The sign is available from any office of the AA at R12.50 for members or R15 for non-members.
