Scania SA opens subsidiary in
Tanzania

Scania South Africa, the local subsidiary of the Swedish truck and bus manufacturer, has taken over the commercial responsibility of the company's operations in Tanzania. Scania CVAB is headed by country manager, Anders Liss and complements other new regional operations in Botswana and Namibia.

According to Scania SA MD, Ulf Grevesmühl, every new operation opened in southern Africa has furthered the objectives of Scania in terms of its business model which is centred on the formation of an African sales and service 'hub', the centre of which is in South Africa.

"In addition to Tanzania, Botswana and Namibia, Scania's 'hub' serves Angola, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, the southern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique," he says.

"We have cemented our position as the premier exporter of heavy duty trucks from South Africa and Scania is currently the market leader in all the African countries - outside of South Africa - that it services," says Grevesmühl.

Last year Scania shipped 124 trucks and 149 buses to customers outside of South Africa. Within South Africa, Scania hold an approximate 14% share of the heavy-duty truck market - up from 11% in 2003.

Underlining its emphasis on Africa and in order to meet growing demand for Scania's trucks and buses, the company has also increased the capacity of its Johannesburg-based assembly plant. This helped Scania post record sales in 2004.

Henrik Orrling, Scania SA's export director says that by taking over the commercial responsibility for Tanzania, Scania SA has demonstrated its support for that country's truck and bus operators. "It is also a clear indication that the 'hub' concept, pioneered by Scania in Africa, is working successfully," he says.

To Scania we say: Well done for holding the South African flag high in Africa.
