Move to clean up industry

Members of the United Roadworthy Association (URA) have taken the decision to join the Retail Motor Industry organisation (RMI) as the 14th accredited association of the RMI. It will be recognised as the National Vehicle Testing Association.(NVTA).

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Wally Cracknell, chairman of the URA, says members have become disillusioned with, among many things, negative press reports that focus on the total industry rather than the miscreants only.

"We operate in an industry where integrity is sneered at, honesty is described as controversy and the truth is a dangerous commodity. We are also ruled by pompous and authoritarian bureaucrats whose standards and objectives appear to be ruled by their own petty ambitions and, inevitably, personal greed," he says.

Wow! Powerful stuff this!

"We intend to implement national standards of vehicle testing that will significantly retard our horrific road death statistics. We also wish to reduce the presently massive stolen vehicle market by making it more and more difficult for the corrupt and dishonest to continue to operate," he adds.

The RMI is a proactive, relevant employer organisation that is recognised both as the leading voice in the retail motor industry serving the needs of its members and for its key role in enabling motor traders to deliver top class service to motoring customers in Southern Africa.

The RMI will act against those member roadworthy testing stations that prove to be negligent in their responsibilities. A key strategy of the NVTA will be to encourage all motorists and truckers to undertake regular vehicle tests irrespective of motor licence or law requirements.

"Once vehicle users become part of the solution and assist the NVTA in their quest, the result will be a win-win situation for all," says Cracknell.

And so say all of us!
