FAW IS ON
THE MOVE

News from truck manufacturer FAW is that it has embarked on a major dealer development programme aimed at increasing the range and scope of its dealer and service network in South Africa. At the same time it has started an aggressive new marketing drive into neighbouring states.

FAW already has dealerships in Gauteng - Randburg, Brakpan, Springs, Johannesburg Central and Pretoria - as well as in Pietersburg, Bloemfontein, Durban and Kimberley, which covers the Northern Cape.

Its latest dealer-building programme is being concentrated in the Eastern Cape where dealerships are being opened to cover owners in the Queenstown, East London and King William's Town areas. There are also plans for new dealerships in Port Elizabeth, in Welkom in the Free State and Richards Bay in northern kwaZulu-Natal.

"The Western Cape currently has service outlets and we are looking at prospects to open dealerships in selected areas there," says FAW's dealer development manager Tommy Blake.

The new expansion programme will bring the total number of FAW dealerships in South Africa to at least 15.

Outside South Africa, FAW is establishing a strong new dealer base in Gaborone in Botswana, with the possibility of further expansion to Francistown and Maun. It also has a dealer base in Swaziland. The company is also actively investigating the possibility of establishing dealerships in Mozambique and Namibia.

A window of opportunity has also been opened in Zimbabwe via a recent order for close to 100 tippers and dropsides for that country.

Blake says FAW has, in recent months, also embarked on a programme to further increase the reliability and performance of its trucks through a sustained quality audit programme on the assembly floor.

"As a result, we can confidently say that the quality of FAW trucks is today better than ever and compares well with its much higher-priced competitors. This partly explains the big inroads we are making into the medium and heavy truck market."
