Sprinter grows up

Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles recently introduced the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 616 CDI, a truck that narrows the gap between vans and light trucks in the South Africa market.
With a gross vehicle mass of 5 990 kg and payload of around 3 700 kg - depending on body mass - this 'new truck on the block' rounds off the Sprinter range well.
Equipped with a 115 kW (156 hp) CDI engine and five speed transmission, the vehicle combines comfort, safety and agility with the payload of a light truck. The expanded range is aimed at - among other operators - nurseries and landscape gardeners, refrigerated vehicle users, cash-in-transit vans, truck rentals, food and beverage distributors, furniture removals and farming.
Three basic versions of the 616 CDI have been made available in South Africa. These are the chassis cab (single), crew cab (3-doors) and chassis cowl. The crew cab is particularly ambitious as it has enough space to carry six passengers and a driver as well as an ample loadbay area for tools and equipment. It should find favour among such operators as electricians, plumbers and municipal services.
A continuously parallel frame provides excellent conditions for special-purpose bodies that will be produced in a partner-like co-operation with selected bodybuilders. The manufacture and fitting of both commercial and passenger bus bodies is strictly controlled to ensure the inherent quality and safety of the Sprinter is not infringed.
