W ith 2010 World Cup Soccer events looming and public safety foremost in the minds of the event planners, the eThekwini Fire Department has responded by including a portable emergency control room in its arsenal.Built by Serco Industries in Durban, the demountable pod can be stationed at major events venues for support and quick response in emergencies. Serco’s technical team based at its facility in Phoenix Industrial Park worked closely with the fire department on the project and created a 3D model using state of the art CAD design software. The pod is transported by a hook-lift truck to and from a scene where it is needed. Serco's managing director, Clinton Holcroft, says the body is made from corrosion-resistant composite panels. "The body is fitted to a hot dip, galvanised underframe designed for loading and off-loading with the hooklift." Serco also managed the project of co-ordinating several contractors for furnishing the kitchen and control room to create the required high quality finish. It also has facilities for an awning to be attached to both sides of the structure providing extra room for the care and recreation of fire fighters. The pod can be adapted for a variety of purposes including being used as an operations headquarters during emergencies. The department is still fitting out the unit with specialist equipment and plans to install LCD monitors among other features. Manager, Supply Services at the eThekwini Fire Department, Lance Ravidutt, says they are extremely happy with the new product. "It has been custom-made to meet our needs and it fits the bill in all regards. We are highly impressed with the quality and structure." |
