Freightliner

In the tradition of the original founder, Leland James in the 1920’s, Freightliner has continued to offer trucks customised for the operators individual requirements. This has contributed in no small part to the huge success of Freightliner in its home market, where it has been the Class 8 market leader for more than 10 years.

This philosophy and success has been also been applied locally and Freightliner has been the most popular long haul tractor (>400hp 6x4) in South Africa since 2005.

In addition to the so called stock spec range of Argosy and Columbia trucks, customers can request a huge variety of options and alternatives, designed to enhance their particular operational requirements. Several customers have taken advantage of this capability and have reaped the rewards in unsurpassed payload potential and fuel efficiency.

The stock spec Argosy introduced in 2000, with specifications intended to cover at least 80% of the South African long haul market, has undergone continuous  development and improvements including being the first brand to include the superb Eaton Autoshift transmission with Smartshift interface as standard equipment.

The Columbia introduced in 2007 has been hugely successful as a regional haul tractor and continues in the range with a new engine supplied by Detroit Diesel, the MBE 4000. This engine has been a runaway success in the United States and locally has already proven to return class leading fuel efficiency and performance.

The Freightliner dealer organisation has been further expanded and support standards improved, including the in-house support for Detroit Diesel on highway engines.

Going forward, Freightliner will continue to introduce cutting edge technology where it is beneficial to the customer and continue to rely on proven components, a philosophy that has proven its worth to Freightliner customers on well over 6000 units in South Africa.
