Innovation
Through teamwork
(453 KB- JPG)

The ‘Green Trailer’...
Barloworld Logistics has developed a “Green Trailer” which through some practical innovation achieves reduction in fuel used. Patrick O’Leary applauds them for new trends set.

The Consumer Protection Act ...
Automotive component and lubricant suppliers dumping poor quality products into the South African market face a real threat from a reinvigorated Consumer Protection Act. Dave Scott reports.

Cleaner fuels for the future...
Over the last few years there have widespread calls from the road freight industry and truck makers for cleaner, world class diesel. Andrew Parker reports on the state of play.

Operators open to fuel theft...
Fuel management specialist Hein Crocker say, many fleet operators are simply not with the programme when it comes to managing their in-house fuel stocks or on road usage.

Speed up the process...
Truck engine makers say oil companies must accelerate the process towards producing cleaner fuels as soon as possible as the current low-quality fuels are blocking efforts to bring the latest technology, low-emission engines into the country.

Filtering through the puffery...
Not many vehicle fleet operators give due attention to the filtration aspects of their trucks, which is a serious indictment in the light of new technology engines coming into the South African market.

Huge challenges for filter makers...
In a paper delivered at the ninth international filtration conference, Phillip Johnson of the Donaldson Company in the USA says while current filter designs address contaminants such as dirt and water, the filters of the future will have to deal with newer impurities such as gas entrainment, fuel oxidation and the products of degradation, a range of different fuels, additives and lubricity agents. The list goes on.

Government intervention needed...
Government intervention is the only way to secure future supplies of refined products (petrol, diesel and jet fuel) from Durban to the inland region beyond 2011 when the new multi-products pipeline (NMPP) comes on stream.

New refinery on track...
Much hope is being pinned on a proposed new refinery to be built in the Eastern Cape to provide clean fuels in the quantities required when Euro 4 emission standards come into force writes Andrew Parker.

Filtering off highway dirt...
Although common in on-highway applications, truck engines armed with High-Pressure Common-Rail (HPCR) fuel systems designed to meet the latest emissions standards are a new facet in harsh, unsympathetic, off-highway operating conditions.

Tank cleaner upgrade...
Algae-X International has expanded its tank cleaning equipment line with the MTC-HC50 high capacity mobile tank cleaning and fuel restoration system.

BrakeWatch...
The FleetWatch Brake &TyreWatch team visited the North West Province to check out the state of trucks. Not much good news here. Patrick O’Leary Reports.

Tyre Woes...
As in past Brake & Tyre Watch projects, tyre faults were many – not all dangerous but certainly costly to the operators. Our tyre expert, Marcus Haw, explains some of the causes. Please take note as tyres are critical safety items
.

Training day... 82 cops...
One of the great achievements of
Brake & Tyre Watch is that hundreds of traffic officials around the country have been trained through this project in identifying signs of unroadworthy trucks. In North West Province, we added another 82 cops to this expanding pool of knowledge.

Avoiding Diesel Freeze...
Harsh winter temperatures have caught truck operators struggling with cold start problems. In an effort to ensure operators do not get frozen out, FleetWatch technical correspondent Dave Scott looks at cold starting and diesel freeze.

The climes have changed...
Commercial vehicle fleet operators should brace themselves as government prepares a range of new environmental legislation that will irrevocably change the way they do business in the future writes
Andrew Parker.

Green transport on horizon...
While a great many South Africans have only been able to think and talk about football over the last couple of months, the South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI) has been hard at work preparing for a national roll out of the “Green Transport Programme” which showcases green transport technology options.

Slick microbes may save the day...
Billions of tiny hydrocarbon-chewing microbes may ultimately clean up the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Big role for small bugs...
Micro organisms are playing a big role in the development of sustainable biofuel that could help reduce society’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Big business joins the green revolution...
A growing demand for business to “go green” is encouraging companies around the world to reduce their carbon footprints, or the quantity of greenhouse gases emitted in the course of their daily operations.
