Diabetes - The Deadly Dangers of Diabetes

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the body produces either too little insulin, or the insulin does not work properly, increasing the sugar level in the blood. This high blood sugar level, if left untreated, can cause irreversible damage and ultimately lead to death.

There are Two Main Types of Diabetes :

Type 1
- Insulin dependant diabetes: A person who has no insulin in their body and has to rely on regular insulin injections.

Type 2 - Non-insulin dependent diabetes: A person who has sufficient insulin and has to follow a special diet or take tablets to control sugar levels.

The Following High Risk Categories are Associated with Diabetes

  • A family history of diabetes
  • Over 40 years of age
  • High blood pressure
  • Raised cholestrol

Avoid Complications by Detecting Diabetes Early!

Between 90-95% of diabetics suffer from type 2 diabetes, and unless this condition is diagnosed early enough, serious complications may be the result :

  • Heart Disease - 75% of diabetics die from cardiovascular complications.
  • Nerve Damage - 50% of all amputations performed are due to uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Visual Impairment - 50% of patients with uncontrolled diabetes suffer visual impairment.
