Supplements - Operators Handbook on Driver Health

Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the pancreas produces either too little insulin or the insulin does not work effectively, resulting in too much sugar staying behind in the blood. This high blood sugar level if left untreated, can cause irreversible damage and ultimately lead to death.

There are two main types of Diabetes :

Type 1 - Insulin dependant diabetes :

Occurs when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin. Daily insulin injections are required to control Type 1 Diabetes.

Type 2 - Non-insulin dependant diabetes :

Occurs when the pancreas produces insufficient insulin. Following a special diet or taking oral medication can control sugar levels.

The following high risk categories are associated with Type 2 diabetes :

  • A family history of diabetes
  • Over 40 years of age
  • High blood pressure
  • Raised cholestrol
  • Overweight

The early warning signs of diabetes are often vague. However, if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms without obvious cause, consult your doctor.

  • Abnormal thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Dry skin
  • Hunger
  • Blurred vision
  • Tiredness and lack of energy
  • Nausea
  • Repeated infections can be a warning sign of the development of diabetes

If you are in a high risk category or show any of the above symptoms don't delay - a simple blood test by your doctor or health care professional would ensure early diagnosis and effective treatment!
