The Challenge is On

Talk is cheap so when Ferdi De Vos, editor of Wiel magazine reckoned a Touring car could whip any of the Supertrucks in a quarter-mile sprint, FleetWatch editor Patrick O'Leary challenged him to put his car where his mouth is and meet on the track at Killarney.

Wiel has taken up the challenge and has chosen as its weapon the Nissan Primera which won this year's Touring Car championship. It will be driven in the challenge by three times South Africa Touring car champion, Giniel de Villiers.

The FleetWatch weapon is the TCH Truck Racing Team's MAN 18.414 FT which won the 1999 European Constructors championship. It will be driven by 1999 European Supertruck racing champion, Fritz Kreutzpointer.

The challenge will take place on race day at Killarney on December 4th and will take the form of a timed quarter-mile sprint with a rolling Indy-type start. Be there! And here's an early warning to Wiel: Jou wiele gaan pap ry.

And a big thanks to MAN Truck & Bus SA, to the TCH Truck Racing Team and to Nissan SA for so willingly entering into the spirit of the challenge. Your co-operation and enthusiasm is much appreciated.
